Motor Power Supply Converter Controller
The motor power conversion controller can adapt to the requirements of voltage, current, power, protection, dynamic load response and efficiency when the DC motor is working, which are briefly described as follows:
1. Output Voltage and Current
Select a power supply that can provide a stable voltage within the motor's operating range. For current, ensure that the power supply can withstand the motor's peak demand. For example, if a motor requires a continuous current of 10A and a peak current of 20A during startup, a power supply with a rated continuous output of 10A but capable of providing at least 20A peak current during the startup period (usually 20-30 milliseconds) should be selected.
2. Power Capacity
Calculate the average continuous power requirement:
Continuous Power = Voltage × Maximum Continuous Current
A margin of approximately 20% to 30% should be added to cope with transient loads. For example, for a motor requiring 24VDC and 8A, the power supply should provide at least 192W of continuous power (24×8=192W). After considering the margin, the power supply should be able to deliver 250W of power for at least 10 seconds. Meanwhile, power derating under the worst-case ambient temperature must be taken into account.
3. Dynamic Load Response
The load of a servo motor often changes rapidly. The power supply must be able to respond quickly to these changes to avoid excessive voltage drop or overshoot.
4. Back Electromotive Force (Back EMF)
If the momentum of the rotating load drives the motor, the motor may act as a generator and feed back a back EMF voltage to the output terminal of the power supply. The power supply must be able to withstand a back EMF voltage up to 150% of its nominal output voltage.
For example, a 24V power supply should be able to withstand a voltage of up to 36V at the output terminal without damage.
5. Protection Functions
Over-Voltage Protection (OVP), Under-Voltage Protection (UVP), Over-Current Protection (OCP) and Over-Temperature Protection (OTP) functions are crucial to protect the motor and power supply from damage.
6. Efficiency
A high-efficiency power supply can reduce heat generation and energy consumption, improve the overall reliability of the system and lower operating costs.
