Principle and design of full-bridge phase-shift converters

Full-Bridge Topology: Consists of four switching transistors (usually MOSFETs or IGBTs) forming bridge arms, and drives the high-frequency transformer by simultaneously conducting the diagonal switching transistors.

Phase-Shifted Control: The driving signals of the four switching transistors have a fixed frequency and duty cycle, while the phase between the two bridge arms (the leading leg and the lagging leg) is staggered. The output voltage or power is controlled by adjusting this "phase difference", which is referred to as the phase shift angle.


Basic Working Principle:

The switching transistors of the leading leg conduct first, applying the input voltage to the primary side of the transformer. Then, by controlling the conduction time of the lagging leg, a portion of the voltage-time applied to the transformer is "shifted away" to achieve regulation. Energy is transferred from the leading leg to the lagging leg, hence the name power exchanger.

Through ingenious phase-shifted control, the Phase-Shifted Full-Bridge Converter achieves soft-switching based on the full-bridge topology, making it a commonly used power converter in the field of medium to high power (several hundred watts to several kilowatts) switching power supplies. The core of its design lies in balancing the realization range of ZVS (Zero Voltage Switching) with circulating current loss and duty cycle loss. A successful design requires iterative refinement among theoretical calculation, simulation analysis and experimental debugging, ultimately achieving an optimal balance of efficiency, power density and reliability.
